Pipe-bomb attack in Short Strand

A family have escaped injury after two pipe bombs were thrown into the Short Strand area of east Belfast overnight.

The glass door of a house in the Bryson Court area of the nationalist enclave was damaged in the attack.

Condemning the attack, Ulster Unionist MLA for east Belfast, Sir Reg Empey said: “This type of action is totally unacceptable. Those who take part in such attacks are putting lives at risk. After the relative calm in the area in recent weeks it would be tragic if we were to see a return to violence on our streets.”

The occupant of the house said it was the third time her home had been attacked since July. She said that both she and her children were lucky they were not hurt during the incident.

The police said the pipe bombs had been taken away for forensic examination.
