Oracle cuts may not affect operation in Ireland

Technology giant Oracle has indicated that the bulk of 500 to 600 job cuts it is planning will be made in its European and Asian operations.

However, a spokesman for Oracle Ireland said it was hoped the job cuts would have no impact here, adding that its Irish operations are still hiring more staff. Oracle Ireland has a workforce of about 1,100.

In an interview today, Oracle's chief financial officer Jeff Henley said the slowdown in the European technology sector was beginning to have more serious implications for Oracle's businesses in the region.

He said he expects a modest turnaround in the US in 2003, with Europe and Asia likely to turn around a few quarters later.
