EMC set to trim global workforce by 7%
EMC Corporation, the data storage company that employs 1,300 in Cork and Dublin, has announced it will cut its global workforce by 7% following disappointing third-quarter results.
EMC has yet to decide where the estimated 1,300 redundancies will be sought - and it may be several weeks before it is known if either of its Irish operations will be targeted.
Three hundred workers lost their jobs at the Cork plant last April, as EMC felt the full force of the worldwide information technology (IT) downturn.

JLR To Create 1,300 Jobs In The West Midlands
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has announced it is to create 1,300 jobs at its plant in the West Midlands. The car maker also confirmed its newest vehicle will be made in Britain. The jobs will be based at its Solihull plant, where the firm will build the new Jaguar crossover SUV model.

A junior minister is being told to "apologise or quit" after entering a row with the civil service. Junior Minister of State, John McGuinness, angered civil service workers and union member by saying there was now a culture in the civil service that "destroys ambition" and that workers are over-protected by unions.

An Post To Cut 1,300 Jobs By 2012
An Post has announced plans to reduce its workforce by more than 1,300 over the next three years. The company is seeking to cut 250 jobs from its Dublin headquarters in the first phase of the cuts from January. Around 450 staff have already received letters regarding voluntary redundancy.

New research, conducted among microelectronics firms in Ireland, forecasts that 1300 new jobs will be generated in the sector over the next three years. The research also showed that there were currently over 50 open opportunities in the sector today in Ireland.
