Third Of NI Employers Can't Get Skilled Staff

Around a third of NI employers are having problems finding the right people to match the required set of skills for the job.

The Department for Employment and Learning has published findings from a research report looking at the current need for skills of Northern Ireland employers.

Current vacancies were reported by 11% of employers, and overall, 6% of employers were experiencing difficulty in filling their current vacancies and approximately one third (34%) of employers said it was difficult to fill vacancies due to external skill shortages - due to either a lack of skills, a lack of the qualifications required or a lack of the work experience that the employer required.

The Northern Ireland Skills Monitoring Survey 2005: Sector Skills Councils Summary Report, summarises the key findings from the Northern Ireland Skills Monitoring Survey 2005 for the 25 Sector Skills Councils and will provide a useful insight into employer skill needs.

The report also provides the Department with a valuable insight into employer skill needs and will help to inform skills' strategy and the future planning and funding of post-16 year old education and training provision.

In particular, the report will inform the work of the Skills Expert Group which has been established to advise government on the process of identifying skills needs and make recommendations on the steps required to meet those needs.
