Gas Cylinder Alert In Crossgar Blaze

There was major disruption in the normally sleepy town of Crossgar yesterday following a blaze.

A family was been evacuated from their home after the fire broke out in a garage workshop in the County Down town.

The area was cleared when the scorched workshop - on the Ballynahinch Road - was found to have contained an acetylene gas cylinder.

These must be treated the same way as an unexploded bomb - until it is allowed to cool - and only then can be declared safe enough for the area to be reopened and the scene examined.

A 200-metre exclusion zone was set up and the Ballynahinch Road closed until Monday morning.

In a separate incident, also in County Down, an elderly woman escaped unhurt from a fire which badly damaged her home near Castlewellan.

The woman went to a neighbour's house to raise the alarm after the blaze broke out at the Aughlisnafin Road property in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service said early investigations suggest the fire was started accidentally.
