Leading loyalist survives murder bid

A leading loyalist has survived an assassination attempt whilst on his way to work in north Belfast this morning.

Davy Mahood was travelling to work along the Old Park Road in his car at around 9.15 this morning when a gunman opened fire on him.

The gunman struck at a car park near to Cliftondene and fired one shot at Mr Mahood's car, but as he took aim again the gun jammed. Mr Mahood sped off and flagged down a passing police Land Rover.

The bullet missed the car, and no injuries have been reported.

Mr Mahood said: "Fortunately he missed. So there was a gunman who made an attempt on my life and my gut feeling is that it has come from the republican side."

A local source also ruled out the possibility that the murder bid could have formed part of a vendetta between loyalist groupings, saying the area was relatively calm at the moment.

Mr Mahood is a member of the Ulster Political Research Group, which was set up to provide political analysis to loyalist paramilitaries. It is chiefly associated with the proscribed Ulster Defence Association.
