Omagh Victims Group Meets Ombudsman
As the NI Policing Board receives a new report on the police investigation into the Omagh bombing today, the families of those killed in the IRA bombing are also to discuss the failed police investigation into the outrage with the newly appointed Police Ombudsman, Al Hutchinson.
They are specifically seeking to examine the circumstances around the two police officers who were found to have lied to the courts during the recent trial of Sean Hoey on charges related to the 1998 bombing.
Hoey was acquitted of the charges, with the trial judge sharply criticising the PSNI's handling of the case.
An inquiry by the previous ombudsman, Nuala O'Loan, criticised the police for failing to tell local officers about a telephone warning made 11 days before the bombing.
Michael Gallagher, a spokesman for the Omagh relatives, said today that questions about this phone call will be top of the agenda for today's meeting.
The police's handling of the case is already being re-examined by senior cop, Sir Dan Crompton, who will deliver his interim verbal report to the NI Policing Board today, with a final written report due by the end of next month.
