Lightning Strikes Twice For Bertie
The Irish Taoiseach's plane on route to Belfast Airport has been struck by lightning as it touched down - the second such occurrence.
A Government spokesman said the Gulf Stream aircraft later landed safely and none of the eight passengers or four crew onboard were injured.
The Taoiseach, Junior Minister Noel Treacy and Government officials were travelling to Belfast to attend an event marking the 10th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement being filmed by the BBC.
The aircraft was on its final approach to Belfast City Airport at around 4.30pm on Thursday when passengers saw a bright flash through the windows.
The Taoiseach still attended the event, although reportedly slightly shaken. Known for being a nervous flyer, Mr Ahern said: "I just want to thank the crew. They did a good job."
This is the second time Bertie has been hit by lightning as the same jet was previously hit on the wing, during a trip to Hillsborough for talks to restore power-sharing in October 2003.
Planes are hit fairly regularly by lightning, and most pilots can expect to struck while in the air at least once a year.

Former Taoiseach Liam Cosgrave Dies Aged 97
The former Taoiseach Liam Cosgrave has died at the age of 97. Mr Cosgrave was elected the leader of Fine Gael in 1965 and held the post for eight years. He became the Irish prime minister in 1973. Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD said: "I want to extend my condolences to the family and friends of former Taoiseach Liam Cosgrave on his passing.

Funeral held for former Taoiseach
The funeral for former Taoiseach Charles Haughey has taken place today in his old constituency in north Dublin. A full state funeral is being held and thousands of mourners have lined the streets of Dublin to pay their final respects to the man who was known as the most controversial controversial Irish politician of his time.

Two Children Struck By Lightning Released From Hospital
Two children who were seriously injured following a lightning strike in Lisburn have been released from hospital. Seven-year-old Georgia Allen and her five-year-old brother Geordie sustained burn injuries in the incident which occurred outside Killowen Primary School on Tuesday, 07 June.

Power restored to NI homes after electrical storms
Around 10,000 homes are having power restored today following blackouts caused by yesterday's thunderstorms. Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE) have reported that the electricity system was struck 178 times, with the worst effected area being Carrickfergus in County Antrim.
