Minister Announces 'Planning Efficiency Unit'

Northern Ireland Finance Minister Peter Robinson has announced the introduction of a new efficiency unit within his department.

The newly elected DUP leader has announced that one of his senior officials, Richard Pengelly, will be the leader of the new unit, which has been established to put the planning process under inspection.

"We are the custodians of the public purse," Mr Robinson said. "It is not our money that is being spent – this is hard-earned taxes and rates."

He suggested launching the 'Performance and Efficiency Delivery Unit' - which featured in the budget and programme for government - last September.

Panel members include Sir Michael Barber, who was on former Prime Minister Tony Blair's delivery unit, ex-First Trust director Dennis Licence and Frank Cushnahan, the former chairman of the Belfast Harbour Commissioners.

The unit has been designed to work alongside the Land and Property Services Agency and will address issues relating to rate arrears and the uptake of Housing Benefit.
