Jailed IRA Killer Has Early Release Revoked

Despite early release from custody in Northern Ireland - in July 2000 under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement - an IRA killer sentenced this month to life in prison in the Republic of Ireland - has now had his early release licence in Northern Ireland revoked.

Robert Duffy from Belfast was convicted in April of attempting to kill a man in Dundalk.

He pleaded guilty to the attempted murder of Colin O'Neill at the Emerald Bar in Dundalk in March 2007.

Duffy put a shotgun to the victim's face and fired once, before shooting him again in the back.

Duffy will later be liable to be returned to NI to serve out the rest of his life sentence for murder after his release in The Republic.

Originally, in 1996, Duffy was given a life sentence for the IRA's murder of John Gibson in 1993.
