Irish Jobs Market Falters

The struggling economy has led to more misery for workers with a rash of workers handed their notice.

The US computer giant Dell shocked its workers when it announced plans to lay off 450 members of staff at its operations in Dublin and Limerick over the coming months.

Describing the lay-offs as "organisational changes to improve competitive advantage and long-term profitability", the redundancies will mostly affect workers in the company's sales, marketing and support operations in Dublin.

Meanwhile, one of the country's best-known food plants, Galtee Meats, has announced it is to close with the loss of 70 jobs.

There are also mounting fears the confectionery giant Cadbury Schweppes, which employs around 1,500 people, is also planning factory closures.

The Live Register, which tracks those signing-on for unemployment benefit, showed those numbers up by 1,600 compared with April to 159,800, when seasonal factors are taken into account.

This was the highest total and the biggest increase since June last year, and the second highest total since October 2004.
