NI creative industries encouraged to fulfil potential

The Permanent Secretary of the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure, Dr Aideen McGinley, has emphasised the importance of Northern Ireland’s creative industries’ sector fulfilling its potential.

Dr McGinley was speaking at the Odyssey in Belfast on Thursday evening where she welcomed Scotland’s Creative Entrepreneurs Club – a diverse network of creative industries which include graphic design, music, film/TV and fashion, to Northern Ireland.

“I am delighted that representatives from the Club have come to Belfast to share with us the experience they have accumulated in their drive to harness the creative talent in Scotland," she said.

"Scotland has a burgeoning reputation for excellence in this field and, given the dynamic nature of the sector in Northern Ireland, I am confident that we can both learn from and inspire each other.

“Encouraging and harnessing the Province’s latent creativity is absolutely essential if we are to take our place on the world’s economic stage. With 29,000 people employed in this sector and with an annual turnover of £900 million, it is little wonder that four of our executive departments and the Programme for Government is fully committed to driving forward the Unlocking Creativity agenda.

“The potential for Northern Ireland, both in terms of job creation and making a significant contribution to the economy, is immense and we must do our utmost to ensure that local people turn their talent into revenue.”

The Secretary thanked the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA) for their financial support in bringing the Creative Entrepreneurs Club to Belfast.

Providing access to practical support in business and professional development, the Creative Entrepreneurs Club is a forum where people can meet to exchange ideas.

The National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA) is a UK-wide organisation funded by an endowment from the National Lottery with the aim of supporting and promote talent, innovation and creativity.
