Sewage Hits Beaches
The number of beaches in Northern Ireland that meet basic EU standards has dropped by almost a quarter over the past year. The latest Good Beach Guide says even popular swimming beaches like Newcastle in Co Down and Carnlough in Co Antrim fail to meet the standard. The main problem is sewage in seawater, but pollution is also being caused by animal waste being washed down in rivers and badly-working septic tanks.
Trouble Follows Celtic Win
Longer, brighter summer nights have seen disturbances breaking out between rival gangs in Belfast. Trouble flared close to the Ardoyne shops/Twaddell Avenue junction shortly after TV coverage ended of Thursday night's soccer game that saw Celtic lifting the Scottish premier league title. Missiles, including bottles, were thrown in Ardoyne and traffic was diverted from the Crumlin Road during the trouble.
Tutu Praises "Miracle"
A world-famous Nobel peace prize winner has addressed a large audience at Queen's University on Thursday night. South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu has said it is miraculous to see peace in Northern Ireland. "It is all unbelievable really. If you had told people a few years ago that we would be celebrating and having peace in Northern Ireland people would have said you need to have your head read. To see Ian Paisley and Martin McGuinness sharing jokes and working together, unbelievable, I mean sort of the age of miracles has not ended." Earlier Tony Blair and Bertie Ahern received honorary doctorates for their role in the Northern Ireland peace process.

Drug Accused For Courts
A 21-year-old man is due to appear before Dungannon Magistrates Court today charged with possession and intent to supply a class A drug. It follows the seizure of ecstasy, cocaine and cannabis worth an estimated £40,000 from a car on the Ballagh Road in Fivemiletown on Wednesday. Meanwhile, another man (26) is also due to appear in court on drugs charges. He is charged with possession and intent to supply class A and class C drugs. The charges relate to the planned search of a house in the Legar Hill Park area of Armagh when cocaine, cannabis resin and herbal cannabis with an estimated street value of £3,600 were uncovered on Thursday.

Clean sweep for Northern Ireland beaches
According to the Marine Conservation Society’s (MCS) Beachwatch 2002 report, Northern Ireland has less litter on its beaches than the rest of the United Kingdom – despite a small increase in litter volume. Beachwatch is an annual UK-wide beach litter survey and clean up organised by the Marine Conservation Society since 1993.

Disappointing year for Northern Ireland's beaches
Minister of the Environment Dermot Nesbitt said he was "disheartened" by the Marine Conservation Society’s (MCS) Good Beach Guide 2002 which announced a decrease in the number of clean beaches in the province. Mr Nesbitt said: "Northern Ireland has gained recognition in the annual independent guide with nine recommended beaches.

A 59-year-old man wanted in the Republic of Ireland has been arrested in south Belfast by the PSNI's International Policing Unit. Wanted to stand trial for drugs offences that occurred in the Kilkenny area in 2012.

Report shows decline in NI beach water quality
A UK wide report has revealed that the water quality at many of Northern Ireland's most popular beaches is getting worse. The Marine Conservation Society tests water quality throughout the UK on a regular basis and recommended that only four out of 27 beaches in the province were up to standard.
