Substantial drugs haul in Londonderry

A woman has been arrested in County Londonderry after police uncovered a substantial drugs haul in a car last night

Police stopped and searched the vehicle close to the Altnagelvin Hospital in Londonderry at around 10.30pm. The woman passenger, who is from the Cityside area, was found to have £50,000 worth of ecstasy tablets in her bag and was arrested.

SDLP councillor Pat Ramsay praised the PSNI for their success said that the seizure would be a relief to parents.

He added: "These 5,000 ecstasy tablets on their way into Derry would have inflicted serious harm. Thankfully, they are now out of circulation.

"I would call on everyone on everyone in the city and beyond to work with teachers, community leaders, statutory agencies and the police to eliminate this scourge from our streets."

This is the second substantial haul of the drug in last few months. In April, police made one of the biggest-ever finds of the class-A drug in Northern Ireland when they seized 200,000 tablets in an operation in County Antrim.

The drugs, which had an estimated street value of around £2 million, were in the process of being transported in a van along the Ballinderry to Glenavy Road when police pounced.
