Assembly 'Crisis' Recedes

This week's offer by the Prime Minister to chair talks with NI's First and Deputy First Ministers at Downing Street on Friday has clinched a deal over Peter Robinson's appointment as First Minister today.

Speaking in Stormont last night, Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams confirmed that progress had been made in recent discussions between his party, the Irish and British governments and with the DUP about resolving outstanding issues.

He confirmed that Martin McGuinness would be re-nominated today as Deputy First Minister - after considerable controversy amid SF calls to address the devolution of security and justice functions, to introduce an Irish language act and over continuing concerns about paramilitary organisations.

Mr Adams said: "There has been speculation about Sinn Féin's attitude to the nominating process.

"I am very pleased to say that I will be nominating Martin McGuinness as Deputy First Minister. I think he has demonstrated in the last year his exceptional ability to fulfil this role on behalf of all of the people."

Meanwhile, the new DUP Leader, and First Minister elect, Peter Robinson and Martin McGuinness - the current Deputy First Minister - confirmed the move in a joint statement on Wednesday, they said they "look forward to working together after we have been nominated as First and Deputy First Minister".

"We recognise that there are outstanding and unresolved issues, which have been raised with the Prime Minister and which require urgent attention.”
