Home Improvement Store Announces Job Losses

A large building supplies chain, which operates in Ireland, has announced it is to cut up to 150 jobs across its stores, due to the slowdown in the housing sector.

The plumbing, heating and builders supply stores Heat Merchants, Tubs and Tiles and Brooks, owned by Wolseley, have told employees the company is seeking to introduce 150 voluntary or compulsory lay-offs throughout its 100 outlets.

The company's head office, based in Athlone, has refused to make any further comment, but is expected to make a more detailed announcement later today.

Wolseley trades from its Electric Merchants stores in the Republic, as well as Northern Ireland.

During the last five year the firm recruited 600 new staff, to support the demand in the construction sector.
