Community Groups Showcase Good Relations Work

Community groups from across Belfast have been showcasing the work they are doing to promote good relations in the city.

Groups working in the fields of community arts, conflict transformation and training, and with youth and the ethnic minorities, have come together to share their experiences and learn from each other, at a special event organised by Belfast City Council.

Councillor Naomi Long, Chairman of the council's Good Relations Steering Panel, said that there was a lot of good work going on in this field across the city, and it was important that this was recognized.

"An awful lot of the work - especially in relation to conflict transformation - goes on quietly, behind the scenes and away from the public spotlight, but it is work that is making differences to people's lives, both individually and within entire communities," commented Councillor Long.

"In the last financial year, the council grant aided some 186 community groups to the tune of £359,000, to help them carry on this work. This demonstrates the council`s ongoing commitment to promoting good relations in the city – something which our ratepayers always tell us is important to them," she added.

The council also used the showcase event to launch its new Equality Reference Guide, which aims to help its employees understand different faiths, cultural groups and other equality related issues.

The web-based guide will allow all staff to access the latest information on equality-related legislation, policies and procedures in the council.
