Weekend trouble flares in east Belfast

The Short Strand area of east Belfast was the scene of two pipe bombs explosions last night.

The first blast occurred in the Strand Walk area of the nationalist enclave at 11pm, while the other exploded at Clandeboye Drive shortly afterwards.

No one was injured in the attacks.

Another device found in Strand Walk was later defused by army technical experts.

The attacks followed a further weekend of trouble in the area in which 13 police officers were injured after rioters clashed with security forces on Saturday night.

Sinn Fein blamed bandsmen returning from the Apprentice Boys of Derry parade for initiating the violence.

However, police lay responsibility for the "orchestrated" attacks on nationalists.

UUP assembly member for the area Sir Reg Empey met with senior police officers on Sunday and called for a review of security in the east of the city.
