Coalisland residents return home after gas leak sealed

People have returned to their homes in Coalisland after the fire service contained a gas leak from a tank in a farmyard.

The gas leak, in the Annaghmore Road area of the town, resulted in the evacuation of 200 homes.

It is believed to have developed after a 30-tonne tank containing liquid petroleum gas ruptured in the hot weather on Monday. Rain and fog helped dissipate a gas cloud which had formed on Tuesday morning, while senior fire officers said they had managed to stem the source of the leak.

Police had to evacuate homes in the area after residents reported a strong smell of gas in the neighbourhood.

A specially equipped fire crew was immediately dispatched to the scene.

Acting chief fire officer Colin Lammey described the incident as "very serious".
