Anti-sectarian rally goes ahead in Belfast

Thousands of people have shown their solidarity with the families of recent murder victims by taking part in a rally against sectarian violence outside Belfast City Hall today.

The protest, which kicked off at 1pm, was called in response to the UFF's murder of Catholic teenager Gerald Lawlor almost two weeks ago. The demonstration has been supported by the four main churches, the local trades union movement and the business community.

However, the DUP has refused to attend the rally because of the presence of Belfast Lord Mayor Alex Maskey. The DUP have opted out of the rally, contending that as a member of Sinn Fein – which has close links with the Provisional IRA – his participation was contrary to the rally's anti-sectarian ethos.

A similar protest was staged in January following the killing of Catholic postman Daniel McColgan. Mr McColgan's mother, Marie McColgan, has urged the public to turn out in large numbers for Friday's demonstration.

A one-minute silence will precede the march.
