Ireland's Own
More than 400,000 people in Northern Ireland have claimed Irish passports in the 10 years since the signing of the Good Friday Agreement, it has emerged. Nationalist politicians said the figure showed large numbers of people were benefiting from the recognition of the Irish identify enshrined in the Agreement.
Road Toll 'Tax' Dismissed
Imposing congestions charges on Belfast traffic is not a priority for NI Roads Minister Conor Murphy. In fact, he has said such a scheme was unlikely to be introduced in the "foreseeable future". Having examined the issue, the Minister's department concluded such a levy would not benefit either commuters or the city. However, his announcement comes amid previous city council recommendations, in favour of the charge. Council officials had insisted congestion charges are an effective means of reducing traffic flow, while generating income for local spending plans.
Pensions IT Boost
The NI Minister for Social Development, Margaret Ritchie, has announced a £23 million investment in new Information Technology which will radically improve the speed at which pensions are processed. Making the announcement at the Pension Centre, Belfast, where the Minister also revealed that the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) would be working in partnership with the Social Security Agency (SSA) to increase the uptake of benefits, Margaret Ritchie said: "This is great news for thousands of pensioners in Northern Ireland. This investment in new technology will make the application process quicker and more automatic, making a difference to those on the lowest incomes. Older people will be able to access Pension Services from the comfort of their home and this new process will make it easier for older people to claim the support that is rightfully theirs."
