People of Belfast urged to support peace rally

The people of Belfast have been asked to support an anti-sectarianism peace rally to be held at the City Hall on Friday.

Belfast City Council recently passed a resolution rejecting sectarianism and emphasising the right of people to live free from violence and intimidation.

The council also agreed to call upon the citizens of Belfast to attend the anti-sectarianism rally, which will be held on Friday at 1pm.

Part of the resolution passed by Belfast City Council at its special meeting last Friday read: "Belfast City Council wishes to express its sympathy to all those who have been the victims of sectarian murder, violence and intimidation in recent times. This council rejects the scourge of sectarianism in our city and commits itself to providing civic leadership on this issue in practical ways. All parties agree that violence is an unacceptable method to resolve any dispute."

However, the DUP's Sammy Wilson has said his party will not support the rally because of Sinn Fein's failure to admit the IRA was responsible for recent violence in Belfast.

Mr Wilson said the rally was merely a "face-saving" exercise for Sinn Fein's Belfast Lord Mayor Alex Maskey who wanted to be seen to be taking a stand against violence.
