Workers Strike Over Pay Offer

Public Service workers in Northern Ireland have joined colleagues across the UK in a two-day strike over pay.

The employees have been offered a 2.5% pay rise, but union Unite insist that, due to inflation, this amounted to a real terms pay cut.

The local government association, however, has said that the offer is final.

Bin collections, leisure centres, Belfast Zoo, community centres and the City of Derry airport have all been disrupted in the row.

Unions have called for a 6% increase, citing the ever-increasing cost of living as reason for the necessary rise.

"Our members are living on the breadline, yet they have been offered a pay cut when rising living costs are causing working people to struggle,” said Albert Mills, senior regional organiser at Unite.
