Sir John Carter appointed NHBC Chairman

Sir John Carter is to become the Chairman of NHBC (National House-Building Council) from November this year, succeeding Sir Michael Pickard, who will retire on 22 November after over four years in the role.

Sir John joined NHBC’s Board as a non-executive director in 1999, soon after retiring as chief executive of Commercial Union, where he saw through the merger between Commercial Union and General Accident to form CGU, one of the largest mergers in the insurance industry.

As Chairman of NHBC Sir John will retain a number of other business interests including advisory roles with major international companies. He is Chair of Governors of London Guildhall University and a non-executive director of Canary Wharf Group plc.

Announcing the appointment, Sir Michael Pickard said: “Sir John has made a strong contribution on NHBC’s Board over the past three years, which has given him great insight into the company. This understanding combined with his considerable knowledge of the insurance industry will make an invaluable contribution to the progress of NHBC in the coming years.”

NHBC Chief Executive, Imtiaz Farookhi added: “I would like to thank Sir Michael Pickard for his considerable commitment and support during the period of his chairmanship. NHBC has undergone significant, positive change during this period and has benefited a great deal from Sir Michael’s extensive experience and broad business perspective.

“I welcome Sir John Carter as our new Chairman and look forward to working closely with him. I am confident that his expert knowledge of the insurance sector, as well as his clear understanding of NHBC’s work will play an important part in furthering our progress.”
