Plans for a £10 million regeneration scheme, on the outskirts of Carryduff, County Down, have been submitted to the planning authority.

A discount food store, six retail units, 48 apartments and a 268 capacity car park have been proposed for the Comber Road site.

Developers Vico Properties has said the project is set to transform the Carryduff district into a vibrant shopping area.

A spokesperson for the firm said: "Our experience of other regeneration schemes throughout the UK has taught us that providing an element of housing will ensure this becomes a sustainable scheme over the long term as well as adding to the security and character of the development and surrounding area."

However, the firm has insisted the planning process is moving slowly and encouraged locally elected representatives to support the scheme.

Councillor Brian Hanvey, of Castlereagh Council, (logo pictured), has said the majority of his borough colleagues back the plans.

"This scheme will bring inward investment to the area and will create 60 jobs.

"The apartments will also be affordable which will allow first time buyers the opportunity to get on the property ladder, something which previously seemed unimaginable," said Councillor Hanvey.

Meanwhile, the demolition of Carryduff Shopping Centre has been put on hold under article 31 of the Northern Ireland Planning Order.

The postponement means new housing cannot be built on the site until officials consider the effect on the surrounding area.
