SDLP to confront Water Service over flooding of lower Ormeau
SDLP representatives in South Belfast are to meet later this week with the Water Service to discuss the severe flooding which took place last week in the lower Ormeau area.
The houses were damaged when drains overflowed during torrential rain on Friday 12 July. This latest flooding comes despite the recent installation of new pumps.
SDLP Councillor Peter O'Reilly, who visited many of the homes affected, stressed that the ongoing problems with drainage and water services in the area had to be tackled "as a matter of urgency".
Councillor Pat McCarthy – whose home is in the lower Ormeau area – added: "It is simply not good enough that people should be living in homes with inadequate drainage systems. We will be pressing this matter with the Water Service when we meet with them."
On Tuesday morning, residents from the lower Ormeau who were affected by the events held a protest outside the Water Service building in the city centre. A Water Service spokesman said its staff did the best they could under the conditions and that they hoped to have a new drainage and pumping system in place later this year. However, Belfast Lord Mayor Alex Maskey, who attended the picket, described the response from the Water Service as "disgraceful". (CL)
