Johnston Press Could Axe Another 15 Scottish Jobs
Around 15 jobs are under threat at a leading Scottish free newspaper, recently bought over by industry giant Johnston Press.
The award-winning Ayrshire Extra, was sold for £11.2 by Archant last January, but now faces closure as a result of fresh cutbacks.
The Ayrshire Extra has a circulation of 49,384.
Also facing closure is the Extra's sister title Glasgow East News. A total of 15 jobs would be lost across both papers should the plans go ahead.
In a statement, Johnston Press said: "The Company has announced proposals to re-organise distribution management, administration and telephone sales activities at Academy Park in Glasgow and to cease publishing the Glasgow East News and the Ayrshire Extra.
"A total of 15 jobs are at risk as a result of these proposals and consultation has commenced with those who may be affected."
The publisher's announcement follows last week's news that 30 job are in jeopardy at Scotsman Publications, also owned by Johnston.
The firm has also announced redundancies at its Sheffield, Northampton and London bases, as part of cost cutting measures.
It has been suggested the Ayrshire Extra axing would result in nine job losses, with a further two members of staff affected by the Glasgow East News closure.
The other roles under threat are believed to be support roles at Academy Park, home of Johnston Press publication the Glasgow South & Eastwood Extra.
It is not yet know how many of the proposed job losses would be editorial roles.
The National Union of Journalists has held talks with Johnston Press managers to discuss concerns over the proposed cuts.
