Ex-Employee Denies Part In Northern Bank Robbery

An ex-employee of the Northern Bank branch robbed in 2004 has pleaded not guilty to being involved in the infamous raid.

Chris Ward, 24, from Colinmill, Poleglass, denies involvement in the robbery at the bank's Donegal Square West branch in Belfast, on 19 December 2004.

The 26-year-old bank employee has pleaded not guilty to the robbery, which is one of the biggest bank thefts in the world.

Mr Ward was working in the branch at the time of the robbery in which a total of £26.5m was taken.

He also denied two further charges of false imprisonment at his trial in Belfast Crown Court on Tuesday.

The trial was scheduled to open on Monday but was delayed for 24 hours after prosecution and defence lawyers were given time to resolve outstanding issues around items of evidence.

The PSNI had originally maintained that the robbery was the work of the IRA, which both the IRA and Sinn Fein have repeatedly denied.

Mr Ward faces no charges relating to the IRA.
