Call For Young Voters To Register
Young people in Northern Ireland have been urged to stand-up and exercise their democratic right to vote, by Sinn Fein Minister Caitríona Ruane.
The Schools Minister was speaking at the launch of Electoral Registration Week 2008.
This year, the Electoral Commission aims to boost the number of young people registering to vote through a "Schools Initiative".
The initiative will see schools playing an active role in encouraging young people to become eligible to vote.
Ms Ruane said: "It is a vital part of the democratic process that everyone should take the opportunity of registering to vote.
"Being on the electoral register is not about party politics; everyone who is eligible to vote should register and have their say on how we are governed.
The Mourne MLA said she has seen first hand the importance of democracy and voting.
"In 1994 I was an international observer in South Africa when the first free and fair elections where held," said Ms Ruane.
"At that time millions of black people who had previously been denied the right to vote elected Nelson Mandela as President.
"Across the world there have been many campaigns and struggles to bring the right to vote to people and it is important this opportunity is not lost."

SDLP meet with electoral office over registration fears
The SDLP have met with the Chief Electoral Officer Denis Stanley over fears that many eligible voters have not been included on the electoral register. Speaking after yesterday's meeting, assembly member Eugene McMenamin described the exchange as "very positive".

New plans are being established to allow Northern Ireland voters to be able to register online for elections. The proposal's are contained in a joint consultation by the Northern Ireland Office (NIO) and the Electoral Office.

NI voters may be given the opportunity to register anonymously
Northern Ireland voters may be given the opportunity to register anonymously. NIO Minister David Hanson today put forward the plans to introduce an anonymous voter registration system to the province to help protect people who were still living under the threat of paramilitary violence.

NI electoral register published
The names of the 1,075,116 people who have secured their entitlement to vote in Northern Ireland, have today been published in the latest electoral register. The register, the result of over three months work during what was the final annual canvass, reveals a fall in the number of eligible voters.

Electoral Roll Grows - But More Try Fraud
The number of people on Northern Ireland's Electoral Register has increased by over 31,000. The new figures relate to the period 2008/09 and also show that the number of cases of suspected postal voting fraud reported to the PSNI has also risen.
