Prison Staff Suspended After Inmate Dies
With one prison officer already charged with gross misconduct and suspended from duty over the death of a 'suicide-watch' prisoner in his care - after it was claimed he had fallen asleep while monitoring the 'at risk' inmate - 16 others have now been suspended too.
A spokesman said the suspensions follow an investigation into working practices sparked after the inmate, Colin Bell, was found hanged at the jail two months ago in an apparent suicide.
The night custody officers at Maghaberry jail in Co Antrim have been suspended from duty under disciplinary procedures following an internal probe.
Bell, who murdered Bangor man Michael O'Hare after setting fire to his flat in 2003, had been under regular observation in a secure cell as jail bosses feared there was a high risk of him trying to kill himself.
He had already attempted suicide twice before.
Following Mr Bell's death, the Prisoner Ombudsman was notified and launched an investigation into the circumstances of his death.
The Prison Service said yesterday that after his death, a separate internal investigation was launched into the working arrangements of night guards following both management concerns and preliminary findings from the Prisoner Ombudsman.
