Suspect Device On Border

There was a security alert in Co Fermanagh last night after a suspicious object was discovered in the Wattlebridge area near Newtownbutler. Late last night, the police were moving in to examine the surrounding area. The development followed two separate telephone warnings to police about a suspicious device in the area on Saturday. The operation was taking place in the immediate vicinity to the Irish border, where the main A3 Clones to Cavan Road meets the B533 road from Newtownbutler.

RIR TA Return

Territorial Army soldiers have returned to NI after a six month tour in Afghanistan. About 120 soldiers from the second battalion of the Royal Irish Regiment served alongside regular soldiers. Lt Col Andrew Cullen said it was an "exceptional tour", where the reservists trained the Afghan army and fought insurgents. "They got up close and personal with the Taleban - reservists who 11 months ago were brickies and teachers.

Newry Road Smash Closes Road

Four people were taken to Daisy Hill Hospital yesterday afternoon after an accident on the Belfast Road in Newry. Two were said to be in a serious condition while another one the patients was critical. The fourth person, who was not seriously injured, was expected to be discharged late on Sunday. A PSNI spokesperson said that the Belfast Road had been closed, with diversions in place.

Hospital treatment follows city trouble

Two men required hospital treatment after an altercation in south Belfast in the early hours of Sunday. A 24-year-old sustained severe lacerations to his face while a 22-year-old suffered a suspected fractured jaw. The incident occurred around 2am at Belgravia Avenue.

Pension Accolade

The biggest employer in Northern Ireland with more than 10,000 staff, Tesco, has won the national award for Best Large Scheme at the Professional Pensions Awards 2008. Tesco is one of the few remaining companies to offer a defined benefit pension to all staff, the majority of whom are members. Last year, the company invested £225 million in the scheme - more than double the amount that members paid in. "It's official - Tesco offers its employees an excellent benefits package, which not only includes great pay rates and other bonuses, but an award-winning pension," enthused Lucy Neville-Rolfe, Executive Director of Corporate and Legal Affairs.

Man Dies In Workplace Accident In Co Armagh
A man has died in a workplace accident in Co Armagh. It is believed the man was crushed by a road roller while a new road surface was being laid on the Bog Road, Forkhill, on Wednesday, 31 May. Police and the Health and Safety Executive have launched an investigation.

Woman Killed In Co Armagh Road Collision
A woman in her 30s has been killed in a road crash in Portadown, Co Armagh. The woman was hit by a car as she was walking on the side of the Moy Road at around 9.45pm on Tuesday. The road was closed for a short time but it has been reopened. Police are appealing for any witnesses to contact them.
