Three Letterkenny Babies Contract MRSA
A specialist cleaning operation is underway at a Donegal hospital - after it was revealed three babies in its care had tested positive for the MRSA superbug.
A spokesperson for the Letterkenny General Hospital said measures had been put into action to stem the outbreak.
Specialist teams are said to be cleaning areas within the maternity unit, while staff and patients undergo screening.
Best practice guidelines are being implemented by hospital officials to combat the deadly virus, according to Microbiologist Consultant Dr Michael Mulherin.
He said: "The hospital has contacted the families and the GPs of the babies concerned and the infection control nurses and public health nurses are in contact with them and will provide any advice and information they need.
"From a medical point of view, we don't have any current concerns as regards the health of the babies," added Dr Mulherin.
