€400m Gas Plant Promises 600 Construction Jobs

Construction of a €400m Board Gais power plant has got underway in Cork - promising to generate over 600 building jobs.

The Whitegate plant project is expected to be complete by June 2010, and will power around half a million homes.

Bord Gais, a supplier of natural gas across Ireland, will create around 600 construction jobs during the building of the new site.

The new 445 MW facility is a combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plant, which is designed to operate on natural gas as the primary fuel.

A consortium made up of General Electric and Gama Power Systems (GE-Gama) will construction the plant, located adjacent to the existing ConocoPhillips refinery.

Bord Gais CEO John Mullins said: "The Whitegate power plant project is a very significant development for Bord Gais.

"It represents our first major investment in the Irish power generation sector, supporting our strategy in the retail electricity market and providing much needed power to meet growing national demand.

"Bord Gais currently serves over 11 000 businesses with electricity and we plan to enter the residential electricity market in the near future, offering real choice and value to households across the country."

Union To Fight Closure Of Two Gas-Fired Power Stations
The proposed closure of two gas-fired power stations at Killingholme in north Lincolnshire with the loss of about 100 skilled jobs will be fought by Unite the union. The union said that the closure of these two plants with the loss of jobs, such as engineers, technicians and maintenance staff, would be 'a huge blow to the local economy'.

Jobs Boost For Kilroot Power Station
A new gas-burning power station costing more than £150 million is to be built in County Antrim. AES Kilroot power station, near Carrickfergus produces around one third of Northern Ireland’s electricity and it is understood around 80 jobs will be created – 40 permanent posts and 40 contract positions – when the plant becomes operational in 2010.

Green Light For New Essex Power Station
The UK Energy Minister Charles Hendry has given the go-ahead for InterGen’s proposals to construct a new 900MW gas power plant at the London Gateway Logistics Park, Coryton, Essex. The plans are for a new £600 million power station comprising of up to two CCGT generating units, each around 450MW in capacity.
