Rape Reporting Targeted

Police have revealed that a woman has been seriously sexually assaulted in Londonderry - by a man wearing a Halloween costume. The Derry incident happened in the Northland Road-Northland Crescent area of the city between 1am and 2am on 1 November. Police want to hear from a man dressed in a Halloween costume. However, with news there has been a fall in the number of rapes, this has been tempered by suspicions that many attacks are not reported. The PSNI this week told the NI Policing Board there were 420 rapes and attempted rapes between April 2007-08 and, a figure that had fallen the last six months to 192. The Policing Board was told the police has reviewed how it investigates sex crimes in part because they fear many people are deterred from reporting the crime.

Human Rights In Focus

The Northern Ireland Education Minister has highlighted the importance of human rights education. Speaking at a cross-border conference in Belfast today, Caitríona Ruane said: "Lift Off is a great example of how the important subject of Human Rights can be taught in our classrooms." Addressing the 'Mainstreaming Human Rights Education in Schools Conference' she continued: "My vision for education is rooted in equality of opportunity and opportunity to succeed regardless of background, gender or race. Equality has to mean respect for each other's culture, nationality, language and ethnicity. The programme and the work being carried out in schools across this island by teachers and youth leaders must be commended for helping to promote tolerance and understanding based on mutual respect."

Economic Woes Addressed

Northern Ireland is faced with a range of unprecedented economic challenges arising from the downturn in the global economy. That was the message from Northern Ireland Enterprise Minister, Arlene Foster, when she spoke at a joint Confederation of British Industry (CBI) NI/Stratagem seminar in Belfast earlier this week. In the keynote address, the Minister spoke on the near-term challenges presented by the turbulence in the global economy and the initiatives the Executive is taking as part of the 'Programme for Government'. Ms Foster highlighted that the world economy remains very much in a state of flux, particularly with the instability in the world financial markets and the surge in commodity prices which are now beginning to ease.
