Young Woman Killed On Derry Road

A 22-year-old Magherafelt woman has died after being struck by a van while out walking in Londonderry.

Caoimhe Kerr was close to the Castledawson Roundabout when she was hit by the vehicle.

The incident happened after 5.30pm last night; Ms Kerr died a short time late.

It is believed Ms Kerr, a third year university student, had just exited a bus from Belfast when she was knocked-down.

Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward, and said the incident was not a hit-and-run.

Local councillor and family friend James Campbell said the entire community had been left "shattered" by the terrible news.

"They are a close-knit family who are well-known and highly regarded in the Magherafelt area and they will be totally devastated, like everyone, by this death," he said.

The road close to the scene has now been reopened to traffic.

Floral tributes have been left to the woman, one card read: "R.I.P. Caoimhe, no-one knows why you were taken but you are an angel now in heaven, sweet dreams."

So far this year 85 people have lost their lives on Northern Ireland's roads.
