Deadly Road Toll Rises

The number of people killed on the roads of Northern Ireland has risen again with news that a man has become the 87th person to lose his life after being knocked down by a van in a road accident at the weekend.

Ivor Millen, 51, from Macosquin, Coleraine, was killed as he was walking along the Strand Road in the town on Friday night.

Mr Millen failed to respond to attempts to revive him and he was pronounced dead at the scene when the incident happened at around 7pm.

His body was taken to the Causeway Hospital where a post mortem examination is to take place and officers have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

Meanwhile, three men have also been killed in a road accident in Co Donegal.

Ballyshannon town council chairman PJ Branley, 58, was killed along with his passenger Dessie McNulty, 48, when the van they were travelling in was involved in a collision with a car. Both were well known Sinn Fein members.

Last night the third victim had not yet been named.

The crash occurred at around 10am yesterday at Ballymagrorty on the main road between Donegal town and Ballyshannon.
