Victoria's Festive Tree Is Tops

One of Belfast's leading shopping centres, Victoria Square, is about to light-up Northern Ireland's tallest Christmas tree, but only after a rigger, Chris Williams, abseiled from the dome of the shopping centre to place a two metre wide gold star on the giant tree. At 18 metres tall it is believed to be the largest in Northern Ireland and is now the focal point of Victoria Square's Christmas lights, which are being switched-on this evening (Thursday).

Sea - The Water's Fine!

'Come on in, the water's lovely', says the Northern Ireland Environment Agency which has today released encouraging results on Northern Ireland's bathing water quality. All but one of Northern Ireland's 24 identified bathing waters achieved the mandatory standards of the European Commission's Bathing Water Directive. Ballyholme was the only area which failed to meet the requirements. However this was as a result of inadequacies in the local sewer network. Northern Ireland Water is addressing this with a scheduled upgrade of the local sewerage system later this year and which is due to be completed in early 2010.

ATM Crew Hit In Co Down

Two armed men forced security guards to hand over a cash box as they replenished an ATM machine outside a grocery store on the Dublin Road in Downpatrick. The robbery - while it was still dark - happened at around 7.30am yesterday. One of the culprits was brandishing a knife, and the other a handgun.

Two Men Released In Devine Death Probe

The two men arrested by police investigating the murder of a Co Londonderry sheep farmer four years ago have been now been released without charge. The 26-year-old and 30-year-old were arrested on Tuesday in connection with the murder of Patrick Devine in September 2004. However, a third man, a 63-year-old, will appear in court in Londonderry next month to face charges of making threats to kill and firearms offences linked to an incident in the Claudy area of Co Londonderry in 2003. The victim, Mr Devine, was shot several times at close range and was found slumped over his dinner at his remote farmhouse outside Claudy in the Sperrin Mountains.

SF Meet NIE On Cold

Sinn Fein MLA and Chair of the Stormont Finance and Personnel Committee, Mitchell McLaughlin, along with colleague and fellow MLA, Claire McGill have met with representatives from Northern Ireland Electricity to raise concerns around the reality of fuel poverty affecting many people. Speaking after the meeting Mr McLaughlin said: "The meeting with representatives of NIE was a constructive one. In regards to fuel poverty Sinn Fein raised our concerns with NIE with regards to the latest price hike of 33% and the effect that this would have on customers. Obviously this has made it difficult for people such as those on benefits, pensioners and working families, to make ends meet," he commented

96% Of NI's Bathing Water Meets Quality Standards
96% of Northern Ireland's bathing waters have met the required standards for water quality, continuing to perform well in 2023 despite it being the wettest July in NI since records began. Twenty-five of the 26 identified bathing waters met the required standards for water quality when measured against the standards for faecal indicator organisms.

NI Beaches Achieve 100% Quality
Every one of Northern Ireland's 23 beaches officially identified as bathing waters have passed the EC Bathing Waters Directive mandatory standard for water quality. The announcement makes 2013 the best year ever for bathing water quality in Northern Ireland, since bathing waters were first designated under the EC Bathing Water Directive in 1994.
