Olympic Heroes Bring Some Sparkle To Belfast's Big Switch-On

A host of local stars will be on-hand in Belfast tonight for the big Christmas lights switch-on.

Local Olympic medal winners Wendy Houvenaghel, Paddy Barnes and Michael McKillop will take to the stage at City Hall for the festive event, which also marks the arrival of the continental market.

The public will be treated to a performance from last year's X Factor finalists, brother-sister pop duo, Same Difference. Belfast-born Hollyoaks actor Gerard McCarthy and cartoon character Scooby Doo will MC the evening, which kicks-off around 7.30pm.

Lord Mayor Tom Hartley said: "The switching on of the Christmas lights is always a great night for all the family, and this year promises to be just that little bit special,

"Over the years, we have attracted many top stars to appear at Belfast's switch-on, and I am particularly delighted that this year we will be using the event to honour the remarkable achievements of three of the local heroes from Beijing earlier this year," he added.

Although Belfast City Council funds the festive decorations and Christmas tree at City Hall, retailers buy the vast majority of lights around the city centre.

Belfast City Centre Management undertakes the massive task of co-ordinating the switch-on throughout the main shopping thoroughfare every year.
