Major Public Sector Job Cuts Expected

The Taoiseach and the Minister for Finance are expected to announce major lay-offs in the public sector in a money-saving bid.

The proposals are also believed to include significant cutting of state agencies, such as Ireland's many autonomous government agencies - called quangos.

Reports this morning say the measures will include the appointment of a four-person committee responsible for cutting spending and jobs across the public service.

A major redundancy scheme is also expected to be imposed over the next two years.

As part of the civil service overhaul, the Government is further planning to abolish the distinction between the Civil Service and other state agencies, which will make it impossible for workers in agencies like FÁS to transfer to jobs in government departments.

There will also be a National Operations Unit established to handle all future purchases by the State to ensure better value for money.
