Irish Sea fishing negotiations underway

Negotiations on the future management of the Irish Sea fishery have begun in Luxembourg on Tuesday June 11.

The European Commission has warned Europe's current fishing fleet must be reduced by almost 9,000 vessels if the industry's capacity is to be cut by the desired 8.5%. The cuts are likely to lead to the loss of 28,000 jobs in the European industry.

The European fisheries ministers will give their response to European Commission proposals to conserve stocks but Commissioner Franz Fischler has said the collapse of cod stocks in the Irish Sea underlines the need for an urgent reduction in fishing activities.

Northern Ireland Fisheries Minister Brid Rodgers will be among those who will be presented with proposals for a long-term conservation plan. She said she would be pushing hard for the ability to take a regional approach to whatever measures need to be taken and that those taken are based on science.
