Glaxo Announces 200 Job Cuts
Pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline has announced 200 jobs are to be axed at its County Durham factory.
The drugs giant is the biggest employer in Bernard Castle, and provides work for 961 permanent staff and 65 agency workers. It is understood the company will shed the posts at the plant over the next 12 to 18 months as part of a programme "to improve productivity and efficiency".
Site Director Roger Connor said: "We very much regret the need for these proposed job losses but they are essential to remain competitive within the global pharmaceutical market.
"It is a difficult proposal for the company to make and I want to emphasise that it is not a reflection on the quality of our staff or on our commitment to the Barnard Castle site."
The job cuts are result of a three-month review of staffing levels, structure and cost cutting at the Harmire Road site as Glaxo attempts to save £700 million globally by 2012, as it struggles to compete cheaper medicines.
Bosses at the company said it was a regrettable but essential decision and consultations were taking place between staff and unions.
