Union Members Accept Aer Lingus Plan
The union for Aer Lingus workers have this week accepted a compromise package to save the airline from proposed industrial action over even more swingeing cuts. The new deal, which will result in €24.5 million in savings, was voted for by 80% of union members, but will still result in redundancies, less pay and more efficient work practices. Staff can now opt to take on various work practice changes, or to agree voluntary redundancies or take pay cuts in order for the deal to hold.
"It is now a matter for the company to evaluate the options each individual has made under the alternative cost savings plan to see if it provides a viable option," National Industrial Secretary Gerry McCormack said yesterday evening after the conclusion of the ballot.
The company needs around 7% of staff in Cork and Dublin, and 35% of staff in Shannon to leave.
It also needs half of the remaining staff to migrate onto the new terms and conditions provided for to achieve the cost savings necessary.
None of the changes will impact on staff at Aer Lingus' recently opened Belfast 'hub' where similar working practices as those being introduced in The Republic are laready in place.
The decision follows this week's hostile takeover bid from Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary, who proposed a €750 million deal to acquire Aer Lingus.

Strike action at Aldergrove suspended pending talks
Security staff at Belfast International Airport have returned to their jobs just hours after they commenced strike action following fresh talks between union officials and their employers. Around 100 security staff employed by aviation security firm ICTS went on strike from 4am to 8am on Wednesday May 7 in protest over pay and conditions.

University Workers Reject 'Insulting' Pay Deal
Today outside Queen's University, workers are demonstrating against a low pay offer. The current offer of a one per cent increase is 'an insult' to the hard working staff, their union Unite said, arguing that it did not match the 3.1% retail prices index and they would find it harder to buy essential goods as inflation spikes.

Unison hits out at 'blocked' education pay deal
The government's decision to block the local government pay deal to Northern Ireland education staff has been slammed as "shameful and unworthy" by a leading trade union. Unison General Secretary Dave Prentis condemned the deal and called on ministers to behave honourably towards decent, hard-working, low paid public sector workers.
