Pork Lay Off Rises To 1,400
Some 1,400 workers have now been laid off from all over the country over the pork poisoning scare.
According to RTÉ, the lay-offs include workers for Rosderra Meats, where 850 have been laid off at the company's Edenderry, Clara, Roscrea and Jamestown (Laois) plants; McCarren Meats in Cavan have laid off 140; Feldhues Ltd in Clones, Co Monaghan have cut 50 workers; Callan Bacon, Co Kilkenny, where 79 have been laid off; and in Queally Pigs, Co Waterford, 30 workers were given a day's holiday today and no date for a return to work.
Yesterday, Fine Gael's Olwyn Enright said the lay-offs at Rosderra Meats would cripple the entire region.
"My sympathies go out to all the workers and families at Rosderra Meats. The crisis in the pig industry is already hitting ordinary families hard and, with Christmas only a fortnight away, today's move by Rosderra Meats will be devastating.
"The company is one of the biggest employers in the area and the job cuts in Edenderry in particular will deal a savage blow. These lay offs will not only affect the workers directly, but also a further 6,000 jobs throughout the Midlands that are linked with the factory. It is no exaggeration to say that these jobs are vital to the area. Such massive cuts will cripple the region."
A spokesman for Rosderra Meats in Co Offaly, a meat processor with four sites, said it had no alternative to laying off workers.
The Government's financial difficulties have forced it to turn to Brussels for assistance over the crises, following estimates it will take up to €200 million just to restart the pork industry, which is expected to face over €1 billion in losses.
However, early reports suggest Brussels may be reluctant to provide the necessary cash.
Talks at the Department of Agriculture over the crisis are currently underway, chaired by Taoiseach, Brian Cowen.

Vion To Cut 820 Jobs
A Dutch-owned food group is cutting 820 jobs. Of the jobs going, at Vion, 470 will be lost at its Haverhill site in Suffolk, 200 at Malton in North Yorkshire and 150 at Cambuslang in Scotland. The Scottish jobs are a result of the loss of some of its business supplying deli products and ready meals to Marks and Spencer.

Irish Workers Would Take Pay Cut For Dream Job
A recent survey has revealed the vast majority of Irish workers would take a salary cut if it meant getting their dream job. The survey of over 20,000 people found 84% believe a fulfilling career is more important than money amid ongoing turmoil with the government, unions and employers locked in the latest round of national pay talks.
