NI entrepreneurship lags behind rest of UK

A leading Northern Ireland lecturer has said that the level of entrepreneurship in Northern Ireland is currently well behind the rest of the UK and Ireland.

University of Ulster lecturer, Professor Terri Scott made the statement as she delivered a lecture on innovation and entrepreneurship at the university's Magee campus in Londonderry.

Addressing an invited audience of academics, business leaders and key opinion formers Professor Scott said: "We need to make better use of our role models. The champions of business simply do not have the same cachet with young people as do pop singers and professional footballers."

Professor Scott takes up a new post as Managing Director, Innovation and Entrepreneurship with Invest Northern Ireland, the new economic development body next week.

She added that Northern Ireland did not have a business culture that encouraged risk-taking and that if business wanted to succeed in the province society needed to embrace innovation and entrepreneurship in all sectors.
