Computer Giant Slashes Limerick Jobs
The computer manufacturing multi-national Dell has briefed its employees on the company's plans to chop 1,900 jobs from its Irish workforce.
The announcement was broken to employees through a video link from the US, with the company's Chief Executive, Micheal Bell, speaking to employees directly.
Dell, which ranks itself as Ireland's largest exporter, largest technology company and second largest company overall, said it would move production of computer systems for customers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa to its Polish plant and third-party manufacturing partners.
The company's 3,000 Irish workers were called to the meetings which began at 9.00am with the IT, legal and marketing staff meeting separately at 10.00am.
Dell cut more than 8,000 jobs last year, and has been involved in a restructuring programme for several months.
Kieran O'Donnell, TD for Fine Gael, said: "This announcement has major implications not only the 3,000 direct workers in Dell, but, also the 10,000 to 15,000 jobs in the region that are linked into Dell, involving companies like Bantha and Flextronics.
"We must recognise that Dell has been a great employer for Limerick and the region over the past eighteen years and hope that it will continue to do so."

The Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton T.D., has announced details of the €1 million initial investment in a research programme in data analytics, a key sector growing at 40% per annum worldwide targeted for jobs growth as part of the 'Disruptive Reforms' in the Government's Action Plan for Jobs 2013.
