The province's water company, Northern Ireland Water, has admitted it will have to pay up to £3m to alter a contract with a company it hired to run customer billing and other services. Steria has another four years of a seven-year contract left to run. NI Water is to take over management of specialist sub-contractors but Steria will continue to carry out business services including IT support

An Irish hospital has begun a probe into how confidential patients' notes were found dumped in an alleyway in Londonderry. The documents - from Letterkenny General Hospital in Co Donegal - were found in a back lane at Gartan Square in the Bogside area.
SF's Doherty Steps Down As Party's VP
Although staying on as both MP and MLA for West Tyrone, Sinn Féin MP and MLA Pat Doherty is to step down from his role as the party's Vice President. He has held the position for 20 years. Dublin MEP Mary Lou McDonald will stand for the role at next month's Ard Fhéis. The move is part of a reshuffle which will see the promotion of a number of party members from the Republic of Ireland to leading positions.

As last year's festive turkey and ham dinners are put behind us yet again, the Livestock & Meat Commission (LMC) is continuing to highlight year-round favourite fare for NI consumers. According to the red meat and lamb promotional body, some shining stars have emerged in terms of popularity. Roast leg of lamb, sizzling beef noodles and lamb cottage pie were the top three downloaded recipes in 2008 - taken from the LMC's own www.lovebeefandlamb.com website. Dedicated solely to Northern Ireland Farm Quality Assured beef and lamb, the website was developed by the LMC to focus on the versatility, quality and flavour of Northern Ireland Farm Quality Assured beef and lamb. According to a spokeswoman, over 40,000 users visit the site on average each month to choose tasty, mouth watering and nutritious dishes ranging from the juicy beef burger to the luscious rack of lamb with a rosemary and mustard crust.

Northern Ireland's drinking water has met the required standards of cleanliness according to a new report The statutory 2002 Drinking Water Quality Report indicated that 98.55% of all tests carried out on samples taken from customers’ taps complied with the regulatory standards set by the Water Quality Regulations (Northern Ireland) for 2002.

Work begins on £20m Mourne water treatment works
Regional Development Minister Peter Robinson has helped to lay the foundations of the new £20 million Mourne Water Treatment Works at Drumaroad, near Castlewellan. It will be the largest Water Treatment Works to be constructed in Northern Ireland and will treat 155 million litres of water per day, supplied from the Silent Valley in the Mournes.
