A man has been assaulted in Londonderry after four men forced their way into a house in the city.

The incident, when the victim - in his early 20s - was hurt, happened in Lisnarea Avenue at about 3am on Sunday. One of the men was armed with a baseball bat, another was carrying a chain.

Also in Londonderry, a man was arrested over the weekend in connection with the robbery of an off-licence in the Rosemount area, police have said.

Just before 3.30pm on Friday a man with a hatchet stole two bottles of vodka from the premises on Rosemount Avenue.

A police spokesman later confirmed that a man aged in his 30s had been arrested in connection with the incident and that he was currently being questioned by police.

Meanwhile, in another violent incident in the north west of the Province a woman in her 80s has been held down during a robbery by a masked gang at her home in Co Antrim.

Four men entered the house at Glebe Park in the Derrykeighan area near Ballymoney at about 6.30pm on Friday night.

One of the men held the pensioner down while the others ransacked the property.

Police said a small amount of jewellery was taken during the robbery. They have appealed for information.
