Minister urged to support hospitality college move

Coleraine Borough Council has weighed in on the fresh debate about the proposed integration of the Northern Ireland Hotel and Catering College within the University of Ulster this week.

The Council unanimously agreed to seek an urgent meeting with the Minister for Employment and Learning, Carmel Hanna to reiterate its strong support for the integration proposal.

The Council’s concern was sparked by the recent uncertainty emanating from some members of the Employment and Learning Committee after representations from some of the Province’s hotel groups, largely based in the east of the Province.

The Mayor of Coleraine, Councillor John Dallat said: “This proposal makes good sense for Northern Ireland plc by providing a world class centre of excellence for teaching, research and consultancy in these two inter-related sectors, tourism and hospitality.

Such an opportunity to utilise the strengths of the University in tandem with the existing College simply must not be missed. This integration proposal has been independently endorsed and must not be thwarted by the predictable pro- Belfast lobby which has again emerged.”

“We will be urging the Minister to approve the integration of the College into the University without further delay.”
