More Job Fears At Car Components Company

Some 1,050 jobs at a car components company in Co Limerick and Co Cork are under threat.

The Kostal company, which employs 650 people in Newcastlewest and some 400 workers at the company's Mallow location is to meet employees at both plants in the morning.

Workers had been on short time since December because of a downturn in business only returning to work this week.

Limerick SIPTU representative Karen O'Loughlin said there is concern among workers that the company may be about to announce redundancies, but its not known how many.

She said the company is a good employer and they will be engaging with the company in the coming weeks to maintain jobs there.

Recent figures have revealed that last year was the worst for European car sales in 15 years, with 2008 sales falling by 8%.

According to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association, car sales to a large extent mirror troubles in the broader economy. In countries where house prices have plunged, car sales have done even worse, with Irish sales dropping 62% and Spanish sales tumbling 50%.
