Kostal Announces 300 Redundancies
German-owned car components manufacturer Kostal have told workers they are seeking 300 voluntary redundancies.
Of the company's 1,000 strong Irish workforce, management are seeking 200 at its Abbeyfeale plant and 100 at the Co Limerick in Mallow, Co Cork.
At highly anticipated briefing this morning, the company also announced plans to introduce short-time working for all employees until the end of March.
Management added that if not enough voluntary redundancies came forward then compulsory redundancies would be sought.
The company said claimed a 30% reduction in orders last year led to the decision, but that it was still committed to maintaining its Irish operation.
Workers union SIPTU said it would be meeting the firm during the coming week.
The Union’s Sectoral Organiser Karan O'Loughlin said: "It is only 18 months since the general election when the Government told people not to trust anybody; that they were the only ones capable of managing the economy. This is the same economy that is now disintegrating around us."
"To date the Government has relied on jobs in the construction sector, the financial sector and general services to fuel the economy. The construction sector is in serious difficulty, as is the financial sector and consequently there will be no mechanism to support jobs in general services."

Service sector employment accelerates
The latest figures from NCB for the Republic of Ireland's economy indicate that the services sector continued to expand in December and that confidence about future activity levels in the sector has risen. At 61.1 in December The Business Activity Index was well above the no-change 50 marker level, which although down on the November level of 62.

€35m Could Help Ex Construction Workers
The European Commission has announced proposals that if passed, will make significant funds available to help unemployed construction workers across Ireland back into work. The plan will see Ireland receive €35m from the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) to help 5,987 redundant construction workers across Ireland.

Over 700 Redundancies Made At Rok
Administrators appointed to Rok on Monday have made over 700 redundancies. PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) confirmed there have been 82 redundancies in the construction part of the business 69 in the Scotland Plumbing, Heating and Electrical (PHE) business, 558 in the maintenance and improvements business and 2 in head office.

Derry Jobs To Go
Derry City Council is seeking voluntary redundancies ahead of a radical shake-up of services. The overhaul has the full support of elected members but it has not yet published the details. However, the union, NIPSA, which represents council workers, said it will consult its members before giving a detailed response.

Union Leaders Debate Anti-Cuts Strike
Union bosses will announce their next move over government's spending cuts later today. The debate to support a co-ordinated campaign of industrial action is currently undecided. A warning of possible strikes over changes to pension entitlements has been issued by a number of large public sector unions.
